영어로 '환경' - environment vs. milieu

environment vs. milieu

 

"environment"와 "milieu"를 한국어로 직역하면 둘 다 "환경"을 의미한다. 다만 그 쓰임에 있어서는 뉘앙스적인 차이가 있어 보인다. 하여 구글링과 여러 예문을 읽은 후 정립한 두 단어의 차이를 요약해보려 한다.

 

우선, "environment"는 '사람, 동물, 식물 등 생명체가 활동하는 주변환경이나 조건'을 일컫는다고 한다. 반면에 "milieu"는 주로 '사람이 살아가는 사회적인 환경'을 의미한다고 한다. 이러한 정의에 기반했을 때는 environment가 milieu를 포함하는 더 큰 개념으로 이해된다. 하지만 그 두 의미가 겹쳐서 interchangable하게 사용될 때도 있다고 한다.

 

상대적으로 덜 친숙한 단어인 "milieu"에 대해 더 알아보자. 그 쓰임에 있어서 milieu는 상대적으로 더 오래된 과거를 설명할 때 자주 사용된다고 한다. (단어 자체가 일상생활에서 자주 쓰이는 표현은 아닌 것 같다.)

 

하지만 이러한 설명들을 종합해 봐도 아직 그 차이가 애매하게 느껴진다. 하여 예문을 통해 맥락적으로 이해해보고자 한다.

위 [예문1]에서의 milieu는 앞서 살펴본 바와 같이 사회/문화적 환경을 표현하기 위해 사용되었고, 시대적 배경도 역사적 과거 상황을 묘사하기 위해서 쓰였기에 milieu에 대한 모든 설명에 부합했다. 하지만 [예시2]를 보면 environment와 milieu가 똑같은 의미로 쓰였고, milieu의 경우 사회적 환경은 맞지만 시대적으로 옛 과거를 묘사하지는 않았다.

 

하여 두 단어의 차이를 이해할 때 완전히 다른 쓰임새로만 사용된다고 이해하는 것을 적절히 않아 보인다. 문맥에 따라 두 단어를 바꾸어 사용하지만, environment는 보다 일상적으로 사용하는 용어이면서 넓은 개념, milieu는 그중에서도 인간이 경험하는 문화적/사회적 환경을 묘사할 때 더 자주 쓰이고, 시대적으로 과거 역사를 묘사할 때 더 자주 쓰이는 정도로 이해하면 어떨까 싶다.
